Misconceptions about Root Canals

Many people have misconceptions about dentistry. Some people have strong anxiety when it comes to going to the dentist. To them, the dentist is the last place that they would want to be. What makes it worse, when people find out when they are at the dentist that they need to have a root canal, their heart sinks. When people hear the term “root canal” they automatically think that they are going to be in a lot of pain. In fact, there are some common misconceptions about root canals. Some of those are:

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT IS PAINFUL

When you have a root canal there is going to be some pain, but the tooth is, it is not very painful. In fact, during the procedure you aren’t going to feel any pain. You will be able to relate the pain of a root canal to that of a filling.

ROOT CANALS CAUSE ILLNESS

This is not true. There is no link to a root canal causing other problems. In fact root canals probably do the opposite of cause illness, but instead they get rid of them. If your tooth has an infection in it, having a root canal will remove the infection, and fill the root with a material that will keep infection from coming back.

EXTRACTION IS A GOOD ALTERNATIVE TO A ROOT CANAL IS AN EXTRACTION

It is important to remember that keeping your natural tooth is the best option, and a root canal allows you to do that. If the dentist is not able to save the tooth, then extraction may be necessary, but if they can save the tooth they will.
